You see them behind photo shoots, fashion shows and other big events, beside big stars in their dressing rooms, or in posh beauty salons in front of their own big mirror and elaborate set of make up. They are there to brighten up and add color to any bland day, or face for that matter. Yes, they are the people responsible for beautifying us, and we call them make up artists.
As their name suggests, make up artists are skilled in applying make up to anyone who needs their service. They put the art in make up application, so to speak. Aside from common folks who come to them for complete make up make over and tips, make up artists also beautify the stars. Most of their big clients are fashion, photography, and commercial models, and actors, actresses, and stage performers. They work for film and television productions, for public figures, socialites, and other celebrities on the small and silver screens. They also cater to brides, debutantes, and other clients who are attending special occasions.
Make up artists can work in beauty saloons that they may or may not own, in retail stores where they work for big cosmetic companies, in large hotel chains, or as free lancers. The basic pay for make up artists depend on the job done, and they usually charge per hour for their service and the make up used.
To be called true make up artists, they had to undergo training and practical exams that would test their skill and thorough knowledge of the art of applying make up and other beautifying techniques, including but not necessarily, hairstyling. Because of the nature of their work, make up artists are expected to be creative and imaginative, so as to be able to bring out the best results in every make up job they do. Another big requirement is that make up artists should have a good disposition and should enjoy working with people. They should know how to communicate and empathize with their clients.
If you are interested in becoming a make up artist, you can enroll in vocational beauty schools to take up cosmetology. Or you can search the Internet for on line schools that offer courses in make up artistry. After you have passed the course, you can then train on the job wherever you want to work to. Remember, start out small, just like in applying blush, and then you can proceed to the bigger and grander things.
